Several Eastern District of Michigan Bankruptcy Judges to Participate in Continuing Legal Education Seminar About Consumer Bankruptcy Issues
On February 8, 2010, the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Western District of Michigan (which covers Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Lansing, Traverse City, and Marquette) posted a notice on its website regarding an “Institute for Continuing Legal Education Seminar” to take place April 19, 2010 in Plymouth, Michigan. The notice (available here) indicates that the featured speakers will be the Honorable Keith M. Lundin and Henry E. Hildebrand, who is a Chapter 13 trustee in Judge Lundin’s district; both are nationally recognized as experts on consumer bankruptcy matters.
Although our firm does not currently practice in Michigan’s Western District, the seminar is interesting because several judges from the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Michigan (which covers Detroit, Bay City, and Flint) are scheduled to participate, including Hon. Marci B. McIvor, Hon. Walter Shapero, Hon. Steven W. Rhodes, Hon. Thomas J. Tucker, and Hon. Daniel S. Opperman.
As I have discussed before on this site, bankruptcy court websites can be excellent sources of information for bankruptcy attorneys. This seminar is just one of many ways that bankruptcy attorneys can enhance their understanding of these issues. The Eastern District of Michigan has recently promoted similar seminars related to tax issues in bankruptcy, receiverships, assignments for the benefit of creditors (generally defined as the transfer of all of the debtor’s assets to another person in trust to distribute among the creditors with such delay only as may be incident to liquidation), operating in Chapter 7, and other issues.
